For many years, Departments and Schools within the Faculty of Medicine and Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong have been innovating and conducting research to establish treatments that will alleviate pain. These CUHK academics have achieved research excellence in their respective fields, while striving to bring the best and most effective pain management innovations to the doctor’s office or bedside so as to provide enhanced care to patients who are suffering from acute and chronic pain.
While valuable, individual research programs do often not have the critical mass required to produce the ground-breaking discoveries needed to achieve the final product of a clinically useful treatment tool. The Peter Hung Pain Research Institute will allow us to bring together the multitude of players required to realize innovation and discovery, in a way that can be translated into clinically useful tools for pain relief. Our investigators and research teams will bring together multidisciplinary skills, including engineering and clinical expertise, as well as entrepreneurial advisors, so that laboratory discoveries can be translated into useful clinical therapies.
We are grateful to Mr Peter Hung, who in 2018 began to explore with us at CUHK, the challenges of translating research into clinically useful tools for the relief of pain. We deeply appreciate his trust in CUHK’s ability to help realize his vision through the gift of a generous donation to create the Institute.
The journey from discovery to application is fraught with difficulties and challenges. Yet, we look forward with confidence, and some excitement, fully anticipating that the synergies created by this initiative will allow our researchers from all disciplines to make Mr Peter Hung’s vision a reality.
